Insurance has beatin' people to death for one hundred years. Yet, it is still sold to us on a daily basis. Notice I said "sold" and not "bought." My peers told me in the seventies insurance was bought to protect your family. Now, with several thousand insurance companies all offering the "best" and "lowest" prices, insurance has become as popular as lawyers. Everyone does not want to hear it until they need it.
Disability insurance is common in the work place. It is designed to help you in case of disability, whether they are long-term or short-term accidents or illnesses. But, how many people actually know why it is essential to your life? Your paycheck is your most valuable asset. Not your house, car, stock portfolio, etc. Without your paycheck you cannot pay for those things. Yes they are important to have, but money bought those things. Disability insurance provides guaranteed income when life does not go the perfect way. I do not know who came up with the saying,"I do not want to pay for car insurance, but I have to have it." But, that does sum up the reason for having paycheck protection.
I do not want to bring in the fact that Social Security benefits are a reason for not having disability insurance. In fact, that should be the very reason you purchase this insurance. Speaking from experience on the matter, Social Security Disability is not enough, just like Social Security is not enough for retirement either.
